A Scavenger Hunt of the Heart

A precious little 7-year old girl taught us a profound truth about the death of someone that we love.  With a precocious smile, she shared, “Just go on a scavenger hunt of your heart.  There you will find all those you love.”

This past October 19-20, 2007, we were all engaged in “a scavenger hunt of our hearts” as children, teens, counselors and even parents took a deeper look into the heart to find those that we love.  A group of over 75 gathered at Good Counsel Camp in Floral City for the 17th overnight session of Camp Good Hope and the very first inaugural Teen Encounter.  Hospice of Citrus County, through the Herry's Kids Division, makes these bi-annual programs available with the generous help of our caring community.  Grief support is offered to children between 6 years old to 5th grade with Camp Good Hope,  while Teen Encounter meets the needs of Middle and High School students.

Another young boy mustered the courage to remember his mother in a special way.  At camp, he was given the opportunity to plant a flower in a pot in lasting memory of his Mom, who died when he was around 5 years old.  He treasured this memorial flower and couldn’t wait to tell his Dad all about it upon returning home.  The young boy told his Dad that he wanted to visit his Mom’s grave, which he had never requested to do before.  Dad, still grieving himself, was hesitant, but took his young son with his flower in hand to Mom’s gravesite.  After having gently placed his fresh flower at his Mom’s side, tears began flowing down his boyish cheeks.  Having watched his son’s heartfelt tribute, Dad burst into tears himself.  His young son, moved by the intensity of the moment, got up to comfort his Dad and offered his support by stating, “It’s okay to be sad, Dad.”  Having reflected on those precious moments, Dad was later heard saying, “I guess camp helped the both of us.”

As we undertake “a scavenger hunt of our hearts”, may we each find hope and healing in the journey before us.  Together, we look back, look up, then look inside to discover those people who can’t physically be with us, but can always be found on our personal scavenger hunt of the heart.
